Somewhere in Time!
Please enjoy doing the Somewhere in Time work found detailed for you on pages 189-190; it sounds very interesting!
Think about the key people and events in history that we have been studying as you find the named locations on a globe or map. If you seem to have forgotten the significance of a place, return to your history cards or text to review what happened there and when it occurred.
Parents :
Use the upcoming quiz on pages 191-192 in this way to prepare them for taking it:
1) Use the right hand column of names on page 191 to review these key people we have studied: simply have your students review what these people are know for from the corresponding lessons.
2) Use the left hand column of names on page 192 to review these key people and WHERE they are from, also reminding them of why they were important to the study of history.
Please do not have the students look at or use the quiz itself, but do help your student prepare for taking it on Tuesday at school. Thank you!

Chinese Dynasties Sui and Tang
It would be best if the students wait to read this lesson the day before classes resume, as they will likely forget much of what they read over the long break; at least I quickly forget foreign information, such as Chinese dynasties!
The only homework is to read Lesson 28.

Review for Quiz
Review lessons 12 - 27, using your history cards and the formerly completed pages 52, 63, 78, and 105-111.
This may feel tedious, but it is consistent review that pulls it altogether in a flow of history.
Do pages 64, 79, 93, 117, and 135 as further review; yes, some of it may be repetitive, but it should be EASY and fun to see how much you have learned. Try to do the pages without helps at first, but you may use the text to look up things you can't remember. Doing this will also help you be prepared for the quiz on Friday.

Beginning the Dark Ages & King Arthur and His Knights!
Complete the reading of Lesson 22 and also read Lesson 23.
Look at Activity #2 on page 127/ 23B. Instead of everyone writing 3 paragraphs, I am making the following assignments for each student to look up the information and use it to write 1 paragraph on the duties of each:
Connor: the duties of a page.
Jacob: the duties of a squire.
Joseph: the duties of a knight.
Allie: the duties of a noble lady.
Be prepared to share your paragraph in class on Friday, so please do a good job to help us all learn more about these positions. Have fun with it! Feel free to also be creative, such as showing pictures or giving a demonstration of something.

On separate paper, write a paragraph of at least 8 sentences that name the factors that contributed to the fall of the Western Roman Empire. Students may use their books. Double-space the paragraph, and it should be in the students own words even though they may refer to the text. This will be an additional grade for the quarter's grading purposes.

Using page 78 as a review, write down either a "famous phrase" that person said when they were alive or could have said. It doesn't have to be something documented though it could be. You may use your book! This is a fun way to review these historical people we have studied so far.
Finally, read lesson 16, "The Maya."

Quiz and Activity
Take the written quiz on page 63. We have been reviewing every week, including today, so they should be plenty ready for this quiz. The only name they seemed foggy about was Emporor Trajan, from lesson 5. Neither books nor helps should be used during the quiz, but they may review ahead of time prior to seeing the quiz.

Quiz and Readings
Take the multiple choice quiz on pages 36-37 of the textbook. Students may want to review their history flashcards and notes first, but we spent significant time reviewing in class already.
Read chapter 4 of The Martyr of the Catacombs.
Parents, please be aware that in Lesson 7 of the text, "Masada," that one section of it on page 41 MAY BE OVERLY INFORMATIVE for your student. Please view this in advance. You may want to read this lesson to your student and leave this portion out of the reading. If you do want your child to take in this information, please require them to be sensitive to the class as other students may not be privy to this portion of the lesson. Also, if you could send me a line in the email IF YOU ARE WITHHOLDING this information from your student so I can be sure to quell any possible discussion of it in class.
With that said, please also cover Lesson 7 in preparation for class on Friday.
If you are able, it would be fun for each student to bring 1 choice of a dried food to share in class in accordance with activity 2 on page 41. Don't go to extreme lengths to make it happen, but if you can, that will be nice. I will bring something as well as we discuss living and eating at Masada.
You MAY be interested in Activity 2 on page 42 as a project to do at home. I think that would be an interesting experience for them to observe how a cistern functions. But this is not one I could keep up with at school, so I wanted to bring that to your attention.

Review and Reading
Make History Card 6 ~ "Josephus" c. 66 AD
Write on the back the following ~ "A Jew, a Pharisee, Josephus loved learning. He fought as a commander in the First Jewish Revolt against Rome, yet later worked for the Emperor's son, Titus, taking on his family name, Flavius. Josephus wrote down the history of his people, the Jews, in The Works of Josephus."
Review all 6 History Cards.
Go back to page 19 and perform the Somewhere in Time activities # 1 and #2, using a globe and/or map.
Parents, please read the Foreword of The Martyr of the Catacombs. Then, read with or to your student chapter 1 of the same book. We will also read some of this book in class, but I felt this was a good place to begin it rather than proceeding to the next history lesson.
We will do more review activities in class on Tuesday and prepare for Test 1 that covers Lessons 1-6, which they will do for homework AFTER Tuesday.

Welcome to the Mystery of History!
Supply List:
1 ring-binder notebook with 8 dividers
loose leaf paper
ruled 3x5 cards: either get light purple colored ones ( I know they are available in color packs at Staples) OR a purple writing marker or pen
a ring-binder book for the 3x5 cards - you will either need to punch holes in your 3x5 cards or buy them hole-punched.
a pen and a pencil
In addition to their text book, The Mystery of History, volume II, students will need a Bible.
In preparation for Tuesday:
Read page xv and pages 8-10, which is Lesson 1. If the student is ambitious, they may also read pages 3-5, the "Quarter I" summary, but reading Lesson 1 is more important.
I look forward to seeing each student on Tuesday!
